Okay, sooooo…on one hand, it seems like this post doesn’t really “belong” on my business blog. On the other hand, being in business is more than about selling. It’s about reaching out, and using your vast network to help others and find informatio.
Right?
Right.
So here we go…one of our family goals has been to take a family trip to Hawaii. I recently decided that instead of talking about it one more time, we are just going to book it, and then figure out how to actually GET there later. You see, we got sucked into this timeshare thing back when we were young(er), and engaged to be married. (Well, the reality is that *I* probably got sucked in and then dragged my then-fiance-now-husband into it.) Nevertheless, we have two weeks of timeshare that we can exchange for Hawaii, so that part is covered.
2 Weeks. Hawaii. Summer 2012. Here we come!
The Dilemma (hence the blog post) is where to go. We aren’t really into the party thing (read: 3 kids, ages 4 and younger), so big Island is out. I’m not interested in visiting a big city anyway.
I’ve narrowed it down to Maui or Kauai.
We went to Kauai for our Honeymoon, which was great. We hiked, took a helicopter ride, and a boat ride…I would love to go there again, but worry about the kids. We’re not going to be dragging our toddlers on an 11-mile hike or anything…
Kauai is a known – laid back island, great beaches, awesome hamburger place, lots of swimming and lounging…
But then… I heard about Maui, and thought that might be more kid-friendly for some reason. I think it has an aquarium. I mean…we have an aquarium where we live too, so maybe that’s not such a big deal.
So anyway – what is your vote? Kauai or Maui?
Have you been to either or both?
Which would you pick, and why?

I’m actually in the same exact dilemma. It’s as if your blog could be mine. We are also planning a
Time share week in November with two girls ages 3 and 4 and are debating
Between Maui or Kauai. If you wouldn’t mind, could you share some of your helpful responses
With me, especially the ones that suggest whether north, south, west, or east
Side of kauai???? Have a fun and safe trip!!!
Hi Laurie,
It’s got to be Maui! More specifically, stay at Kihei if you can, which is on the southwest side of the island. It’s a non-touristy place, very laid back, and with little to no night life – i.e., perfect for families with kids or those who just want to get away and relax. The aquarium is right up the road (15 minutes by car maybe?). There are family-friendly things to do on Maui, like visiting the whaling town of Lahaina (very historic), watching people process sugar cane, and driving up Mount Haleakela (an inactive volcano) to see the sunrise – or at any other time of the day. You can brave the narrow winding road to Hana if you dare – or you can let a tour van driver take the worry out of it while you admire the breath-taking scenery. The beaches are spectacular (which they are on Kauai as well). However, the major selling point for Maui over Kauai: MUCH less rain! You do get the tropical showers (i.e., over in minutes) on Maui, but you do NOT get the long-lasting, drenching, activity-canceling rain that you get on Kauai, even on the “non-rainy” side of the island (which is where I stayed for five very rainy days). After I had been to Maui several times and was thinking about trying Kauai, a Maui resident asked me, “Why would you go somewhere that it rains all the time?” I went to Kauai anyway and was rained upon the entire time, thus learning my lesson! If you decide on Maui, please let me know and I’ll connect you with some people who can give you very specific recommendations for what to do and see and where to eat.
Kauai. It’s such a beautiful place. We can swim all day long, hike, lounge, get some sun, and do anything else that we want to do.
